Thousands of people march in Madrid to protest plans to privatize public health services
The marches, described as a "white tide" because of the color of the medical scrubs many were wearing, finally met mid-afternoon in Puerta del Sol. On Monday, the region's health councilor will meet with a committee responsible for coordinating professional services and union representatives to try and agree how to achieve (EURO) 533 million ($697 million) in savings.
Thousands of health care workers held a rally in Madrid on Sunday to protest against budget cuts.
They also object to plans to privatise the country’s main hospitals which they fear will lead to job losses. The ruling People’s party says it must reduce public spending and the measures will save 10 billion euros this year.
