29 imagesSpend a day watching the races at this stunning venue next to the Monte de El Pardo forest. It is the perfect place to enjoy good food and a form of leisure which has been popular in Spain for many years. Situated in one of the most emblematic spots in the capital, the racecourse boasts large outdoor areas and offers entertainment for the whole family (under 14s are allowed in for free). Kids will not only be able to enjoy the beauty of the actual horses, but will also have access to large green areas, bouncy castles, a kiddies' park, ponies, face and body painting services and a dance area, all free of charge. After the resounding summer success of the Nights at the Racetrack (Las Noches del Hipódromo), which recorded unprecedented attendance levels on June and July, with more than 50,000 persons, this Autumn, the racetrack HIPODROMO DE LA ZARZUELA, with the help of RedKampus, takes again the reins of the leisure scene in the capital, with an irresistible sports, gastronomic and cultural proposal: 'Sundays at the Racetrack' ('Los domingos, al Hipódromo').

62 imagesLa Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near Valencia in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this 'World's Biggest Food Fight' where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 people come to this huge tomato fight, expanding Buñol's normal 9,000 population. At around 11 am, the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.

50 imagesSpain celebrated national Hispanic day today with a military parade without tanks or aircrafts which followed a shorter itinerary than usual due to the crisis. Celebrations in Madrid were attended by King Juan Carlos, who is Spain's head of state and the armed forces. The arrival of military and political authorities including Premier Mariano Rajoy and government ministers in Plaza Neptuno was not welcomed by protests as in previous years. But celebrations were marked by a controversy over the Catalonian government's separatist ambitions. The local government did not send representatives to the national celebrations nor did seven of Spain's 17 autonomous communities. Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia together with the prince and princess of the Asturias and Infanta Elena were applauded by the public gathered along the boulevards of Paseo and Prado.

23 imagesVolpinex, object-theater company from south of France, was created in 2010. Singular by their nature and writing, the Volpinex Company's shows touch a large, eclectic and transgenerational audience. Jack-of-all-trades object-theater, Volpinex' universe is made most of the time with second hand materials, and also video (Fred Ladoué's first job : he was a video director for music, opera, theater and dance). The technical skills join the actor playing on stage, always at sight for the audience. These four following shows can be performed in english and other langages.Cue a lone-rider crossing the desert into the city where Sheriff Jacques Daniel is in pursuit of El Bandido, an infamous Mexican bank robber... BANG! Compagnie Volpinex will produce a Western film in front of your eyes and project it to the audience live. Through small cameras, mixing desks, and plastic toys, the two actors create on a table a real shooting studio. Like any good film it's not without music or sound effects as a musician (Florian Brinker) will play the soundtrack of the western, and make all the sound effects.
